Default Steering stem bolt?& bolt cover

I bought the steering bolt cover kit (motor co.logo) Any of you guys that are familiar, you have to change out the bolt, cause it doesn't just attach like the axlebolt covers w/ a allen screw. this cap threads into the steering bolt.

My question is, is there any special procedure to switching out the bolt?

No I don't have a service manual, yes I know I need to get one.[sm=chairshot.gif]

Any help?

I read from a post a while ago about someone who drilled into the existing stem and tapped 1/4-20 threads...so I did the same. Wasn't too difficult. I didn't even have a vise...I just drilled over the tank (be careful!!)

Yes, that was my post. I just bought the cover and I did remove the bolt and drilled it in a vise to make sure it was perfectly straight. I saw later that they also sell a kit with the bolt and it is pre-drilled. Just remove the old bolt and install the new one. Simple. I don't know the exact torque specs, but don't over-tighten it, check to make sure you can turn side to side with no resistance.

There is no torque spec. for this bolt. This bolt should be tightend by performing the "fall-away" adjustment procedure in the service manual. The procedure is located under "Steering Head Bearings" Adjustment.

So, i'm guessing it's best to do this with the front end off the ground? I have the kit with the pre drilled bolt.

No, keep the front end on the ground. No need to elevate. When you remove the bolt you don't want anything "falling away" on the floor. lol It's really not a big deal, quick and easy. The actual bolt cover doesn't have to be cranked down hard either. There is a rubber ring on the inside which provides friction to keep it from spinning off once it's threaded on. I've logged over 2500 miles on mine and it hasn't moved at all. Just tighten it by hand, a wrench or channel locks might scratch it up.

Yeah, I didn't think there was a torque spec, it's kinda hard to explain, but you'll know when it's tight enough. It comes from experience wrenching on bikes, but again, just don't overtighten the bolt or you'll "bind up" the steering. It's one of those things where too loose is bad and too tight is bad, make it just right, like the three little bears.

Wow, does that part come with any instructions or you just had to figure it out? Was this description the intended install?
