How many of us have kids that are also interested in motorcycle"s?My 12 year old son has a yamaha pw 80,and is just about big enough for a bigger bike,he already loves the sound of a Harley.My Daughters so far only want too ride 4 wheelers,but there is always hope.It will be a proud day when one of my kids can ride side by side with me on a bike.

 

My kids like to ride but they haven't bought their own yet. It is the one thing I feel you should get yourself. You either like it or you don't.
My grandkids on the other hand beg me to take them for a scoot around the block or house. Depends on which one we're talking about.

 

My 16 yr old wants a bike but I don't fee; he is mature enough to ride one, he'll end up in coffin if I let him get a Sporty at his age, any bike for that matter. Our 8 yr old loves to go for rides, we are thinking of getting a dirt bike so they can both ride it and experience the thrill, just nothing fast. I won't even let my 16 yr old get his drivers licence until he proves he is mature enough.

 

My 15 yr old just got his learners (for cages), has to drive with the learners for one year before he can get his regular licence. The other day I said to him "once you get your regular licence you'll have to get your motorcycle licence so you can ride the machine", he just stood there staring at me with his jaw hanging open then got a real big smile on his face.

 

Had my first bike at 15 and a half, a 305 Honda Superhawk.. A screamer for its time..

I'll surely pass on my 883 Girlie bike to my grandson in a few more years.. Besides his ability to learn to ride and handle a small Harley, by then I will have worn the 883 down to bare metal anyway.

Harley makes the 883's specially for younger riders and girls anyway.. It's a marketing thing and they want to make sure the younger set get onboard earily.

I have a 2007 Sportser 1200C. My 17 year old son just bought a 1979 Honda CX500 for a couple of hundred dollars. It is quite a nice feeling being able to tool around with your son.

I agree that you have to feel confident that you child is mature enough to handle a bike. My son and I both took the PA Motorcycle Safety Course together before I would allow him to even consider getting a bike.

Now he has his permit and a bike. He just needs to wait until December when he can get his license.

 

 

So what's the big deal here in my statement? For what other purpose would Harley be building the smaller lighter weight 883 for anyway??? It's a good sized bike for getting around town and small trips... Harley's entry level light weight machine and that's a fact! You wouldn't want a 16 year old young driver on a heavy dresser would ya unless he was 6 or 7 ft tall and physically ready to handle it.

The Harley Sportster 883 lineup is the Little League bike.. preparing younger riders for the majors.. However, some of us older experienced riders like to ride them too.... because there is the thrill of being able to work the bike and not have the bike work the rider.

Most, but not all female riders are steered towards the 883 for its size and above all price and if you believe it or not it's expendability. The 1200 with a little more ommmpaaaaa is for a more flashy apperance and highway passing ability.

When is comes right down to the basic machine of the Sportster they are the same except for engine size. Harley knows knows the market by presenting the 883 as the weaker Sportster, suited for the beginners of both genders.

Harley also now gives the abilty to buy almost any of their line-up of bikes as standards or Screamin Eagle for thoes who want the extra pre-built road-show bike...

Self included, we all just buy what we want no matter of size or cost and we wear our bikes like fancy clothing as we show-off as proud owners of a "Harley"

Harley also moves from Stage 1 to Stage 11 and so on... The 883 is a fact that it's a Stage 1 Bike for Harley.
