Default Hugger or Low model riders

Just wondering how tall some Hugger/Low model Sportster riders are. I'm about 5'9" and 170 pounds and found a 2002 883 Hugger with 4200 miles for sale at a dealer.Might be able to get it for maybe $4500.00-$4750.00 or so. Comes with SE pipes, rejetted, different air filter, forward controls, different risers and drag bars.

IMHO, the "Low" is mostly marketing hype. You'd feel just as comfortable (or maybe more so) on theregular version of the 883.

Especially at your height, a Roadster could even turn out to be quite comfortable if you favor mid controls over forwards. The Low (or Hugger) is sold to people who believe (or have been told)that being closer to the ground when seated is a great thing. OK, maybe if your 4'6" it might make sense from an ergonomics standpoint if you want to flat foot the bike, but that's about it. You can flat foot any of the Sportaters, so why give up the additional suspension travel and ground clearance on a Low when it's not at all necessary?

Seat height importance is a myth. If it was important, Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha could never sell a dual-purpose bike except to people over 7'9".

Had that exact bike in an 03. I'm the same height & about 10 pounds lighter. It was a perfect fit & a great ride. Only sold it to get into a better distance bike in the cruiser/convertible category. Had it set up with mid-controls and adjustable hwy pegs, which was a nice comfort feature.

I'm just shy of 5'9" and about your weight, and my 'Low' is perfect for me. But then again, I rented a late model Softail Deuce on a recent vacation and it fit even better than the Sporty - - seemed even lower in fact.

5'8" and 170lbs. My 2007 XL1200L is just perfect. I have only eversat on 883/1200 Custom and Roadster models in the showroom. I am very happy with my 1200 Low.One of the things to bear in mind with theLow, is that the stock pegs are mid-mounted. Some people seem to hate this. Personally, I love them as I do a fair almount of city riding and have the adjustable highway pegs for use when I need to stretch out on longer journeys.

Tegne, I didn't realize that the Low models had the mid mount footpegs/controls. That is what I prefer too. Does your bike scrape very often in leaning and going around corners?

Thanks, Jon

I wouldn't consider a hugger or low unless it was absolutely necessary. You will find the Roadster or the Custom arealready low enough to the ground to be an occasional problem. Speed bumps in residential areas and parking lots are difficult enough without actually going lower !!

What I like best about my Low is the forward controls - feels just great for me. I couldn'timagine riding any other way now.

Mine came with the forward control kit already on it. Love it! My 1200Low has pretty much everything I want...adequate power, EFI, 4.5 gallon tank, tubeless tires at both ends, forward controls, and a seat height friendly to my 5'3" frame. I weigh in at 140 lbs. Oh, and a Deuce is lower than a 1200L, but not much. They are also unfortunately discontinued. If I get a Softail, it would probably be a Fat Boy....lowered because of necessity.
