Default 60's Style Chopper Questions

Here is the deal. Pop's has a 1956 Pan Head stuck in a 1949 HydraGlide Frame. Just restored it to make a pretty sweet bike. It was a basket case he purchased in 1972 for 200 bucks. 60's show bike etc... think easy rider etc. bike looks amazing. Now i am inspired.

Now. I want to do something similar. Looking to get a 1200 Custom. Budget for the bike is 4500 bucks or so (1997 -2002 or in this range) I want to strip it down and make a similar bike. extend the front end. 21" front tire. raise the bars. do carb/exhaust mods. make it dull black. black rims, chrome spokes and black hubs. new smaller tank, sissy bar in the back. have a single seat with an option to slap on a passenger seat to haul a chick around.

looking to sink in about 2k in mods all said and done. Really looking to get a bare bones look. this is a year long project and willing to go 7500 total realistically not counting motor or tranny work that may be needed (buying a wellmaintained bike should avoid this problem).

I am a total harley newbie, I race desert on a 07 YZ 450. Understand bikes inside and out but never touched a Harley.

Am i looking at the right platform with the Sportster 1200 Custom?

Sorry if this topic is beat to death if so flame away and i will search more in depthly.

Pics of similar bikes would be RAD!! Maybe someone people can point me to some links for Carbs, Exhaust, Tanks, seats.

Trying to do a '60s style chop, using a Pan as inspiration, but going at it with a Sportster might disappoint you. Two different bikes, two different looks. Nothing wrong with using the Sporty as a base, but it lends itself to a different style of bike than a Big Twin does.

It sounds like an ambitious plan. You will need to be a pretty good scrounger though to keep within your budget. You might be suprised how far 2K doesn't go when it comes to HD parts.

Good luck.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ksid=p3907.m29

here is more along the lines of what i am lookingto do minusthepaint scheme andlittle shorter front end with higher bars. less chrome more black. wrapped headers etc.

this is supposed to be a budget project. chopped up and bolted on. not going for style points on this one.

i am surrounded by custom built OCC inspired 25,000 chrome beasts with 30 pounds of sparkle paint and a rear tire thatis wider then what i got on my truck... trying to avoid going that route at all costs.

That ought to be doable with a mid to late 90's model 1200 if he's not shopping at the dealer. .
