Do I have to pay to replace those paper gaskets on my leaking rocker covers? I went to the dealer and they said it would cost me $180.00 to replace them.
I have a copy (pdf) of a Service Bulletin (M-1168A, 11/10/2005) that went out to dealers for 2004-2006 Inner Rocker Covers, which affected bikes built between 11/15/03 and 9/12/05. They replace the leaking rocker cover and gasket. I'm not sure if your bike is the model year affected. If it is, you might want to point that bulletin out to the dealer.

Just replace them yourself with a good quality gasket. It's an easy job and you"ll have plenty of beer left to stand back and admire the work you did. If you unconfortable with the job pick up a manual for your sporty (about 50 bucks) and you should get through the job just fine. The manual is worth the solloars spent since it gives you a real understanding about the whole bike.

Can the gaskets be replaced without removing the tank?

If you don't want to do it yourself, ask a friend or find a small shop that would do it cheaper than the dealership.
Any of your buddies that ride have a garage?
I have also talked to mechanics at dealerships that work on the side, after hours, for less money.
