wierd shutdown/start
Hey out there all hope ya doin good
I had a few posts here about doing a stage one, loved doing it, bike running good, but just having an adjustment issue.
Installed cycle shack slip-on turnouts, arlen ness big sucker with chrome cover, and rejetted 48/180. tried a 185 but went back to the stock, also tried a 46 with the 185.
What is happening: bike warms up good, 30 seconds of choke and no more. You go somewhere, can smell some gas at shutdown. Go in do some shopping/errands, come back out, having trouble starting at times, with no blip on throttle at all. As well, after riding some, shut down and bike still wants to turn over a couple times, or a little rumble after the switch is off still. Couple pops during this also sometimes. Not an all the time thing, but getting a little concerned. Is my jetting off? Checked my plugs also, little black with mild graybut no white.
Thanks gang

RE: wierd shutdown/start
I've experienced the same problem the last couple of times out. When restarting the bike after a brief shutdown following a 30 or so mile ride, the bike just turns over and I smell gas. The only thing I can think of that I might be doing is hanging my helmet on the throttle. It is possible that in doing so it has twisted it enough to semi-flood the engine.
I haven't had time to test this as I haven't ridden in a week or so due to shitty weather and illness.

The gas smell is the clue to me. I would question a rich setting. If that is truly not it,I mightsuspect that the carb's float is not functioning properly and allowing an excess of gas to build up and overflow. Have either of you noticed asignificant drop in mileage? Are your vacuum hoses on properly and not leaking? I know I'm guessing here, but the carb's where I'd look - particularly the float and adjustment screw.

thanks m paquette yah im a bit rich i think i also got an ez-just screw for adjustiing the mix on the carb, havent been super happy with it but its easy to get to for adjusting. May put back the original air mix screw. I will tune it a bit leaner then and see how it goes. I use the bike for long highway runs, as well as in town runs so it really needs a good 200 mile drive. great excuse to ride eh
any other info would be great. thank you again paquette as far as when the bike is out on the roads it runs perfect
i havent checked my fuel mileage yet or vacuum so ill look at those also

Looks like its running rich. It burns the gas OK on highway runs...really sucking it in, but clogsaround town. Check the plugs for a tan clean burn, or sooty black rich mixture. Blackened exhaust pipes are also a clue.
Have fun checking it out. 200 mile run, nice...
