Default RE: Buying a woods bike...maybe

Yea I figured even if I decide I dont want it anymore, once it's all cleaned up I'll probably be able to find someone to buy it for the same money, that was pretty much the deciding factor...my girlfriend on the other hand doesnt se it that way and hates me right now but eff her she'll get over it...she said "what do you need that for, you have a harley?" I replied "what do you need 17 purses for?" and that was the end of it.

I had a RD200 when I was in high school in 1975. It was pretty fast and nimble for a 200cc bike. Those 2 stroke RDs were great bikes back in the day. I bought a RD400 overseas when I was in the Navy. I put expansion chambers and drag bars on it. It was a fast & great handling crotch rocket before there was such a thing as crotch rockets! However, for a reliable and classic bike the CB350 is hard to beet. I had one of those too.

Yea, it's a 1975 Yamaha RD200 Electric, aparently they made this bike with electric start. If you look at pictures on the Internet, the left cover on stock bikes have an "Electric" decal. Mine definitely does, I got it started with the electric once before the battery died...

Also a big plus was that the owners manual is a full repair manual too, with a break down of the entire bike and part numbers. This should make fixing her up a little easier.

Well I found out that this bike only weighs about 250lbs, so with **** tires, a tune up, and some paint I'll be htting the trails. My DRZ400 weighed about 380+ and it was a tad on the heavy side but still a good manageable ride. I'm think a bout taking the front fender and gauges off completely (put them in storage)...not sure yet I'll know more when I start tearing it down.

Well, I've been tinkering around with this beast in my garage the last couple days trying to find what all I need to do without tearing it all down.

It as a major gas leak coming from what looks to be the overflow tubes from the carbs. I put half a tank of gas in it and turn the gas on at the petcock and it just poors out the bottom. I can't find the source yet without more tools and time, but none of the engine is getting wet and it's coming out right behind the pegs on the bottom. I'm pretty sure it's spewing out of those overflows. Which leads me to believe that the floats are messed up in the carbs (or something else in the carbs).

Also this carb problem would explain why when I put it in gear and give her some throttle it bogs down, it might be getting flooded by the stuck floats.

Other than that everything else is just tune up, cleaning, and paint. The bat needs charged and the kicker seams to be pretty well eff'd over, but I can push start it in 1st gear in about three of my steps and pop the clutch it fires right up no problems and no choke.

Any suggestions would be great.

I'd think twice about riding trails without a front fender.

All this talk about RDs brought back some memories, I rode an RD400E for ten years. With chambers, clipons, rear sets, custom seat and bikini fairing it was a fast and great handling cafe' bike. That machine taught me a lot!
