Default New Harley!! :D really frusterated!

Hey all,
I've been lurking the site for a month or so while I was shopping for my first harley. I ended up finding an '05 XL883C sportster with 1800 miles for 6,000$. The bike was clean and had several mods, it looked very well taken care of and ran well when I went to look at it. The only thing I didn't like was the handlebars and LOUD pipes, but for the price, I plan to change that later. After the 100 mile ride back to the house I drained the oil from it's way overfilled point to midpoint where it belongs. I think the bike sat for several months before I picked it up.

The main point for my post is this: Reciently I warmed the bike up, and drove out of the driveway but not 100 yards down the road it started sputtering and losing power. I had to pull to the side of the road as it died! I've been reading all I can about the harley quirks trying to catch up to the "in the know" harley crowd but I'm starting to get a bit frusterated. So far it seems the problem could be anything from clogged carb to dirty air filter to bad plugs to exhaust problems... Any help?

Since I've had it I've drained excess oil, replaced the spark plugs, and I'm currently running fuel additive through it to help clean out the carburetor in case the fuel had started to varnish while it sat.

I could take it to a dealer but the rep I talked to seemed to imply that they could do any number of things to troubleshoot the problem with about as much luck as I would have myself so I'd rather exhaust my own resources before turning to a dealer or mechanic.

I've got some mechanical experiance but it's about 10 years gone and the last thing I remember doing was rebuilding a 1966 Mustang back in 1995. I could probably pull the carb and rebuild it without losing a thumb but if that's not the issue I'd rather avoid it.

Any help would be much appreciated

sheepishly, I have to admit, I didn't bother to check the fuel valve when I bought it and I ran it out of gas the second day. It was one of those "What was I thinking moments"

My brothers has had that same issue for months now on his 06 883. Even the dealership couldn't figure it out but I finally did today. I got it to finally pop a code and it was the crank position sensor. I took the sensor off my 06 Dyna SG and stuck it in his bike and it ran like a champ. Called the dealership and threw it in their face why I had to be the one to figure it out when their certified mechanics couldn't. They had his bike for two weeks and told us it was fixed. Yeah right. It was warranty work and they didn't care less. Anyway, hope this helps.

Right after I posted this I spotted another post on the site that listed how to read the Diags. I checked em and ! Totally clean diags. wish it could be that easy. I'll mention again though that the bike only has 1800 miles on it.

Mine was doing this and it was my ign. control module. If it is this;the factory will cover this for 10k miles, or 5 years.

I hope this helps. I know bike problem always suck.

Has it started since the time it sputtered and died? I had an issue similar to what you described a long time ago. Turned out to be the petcock vacuum hose had come loose. Yours may not be the same thing but you can at least rule this out as a cause.

Symptoms of this problem will be the bike running fine and then sputtering and stalling as if its not getting fuel or has run out of gas.

Look behind the fuel line connected to the petcock. In the pic, the fuel line is the obvious hose in front. You should see another small hose connected to the petcock. It's a smaller diameter than the fuel hose. It's hard to see but that's what the pen tip is pointing to in the pic. It's the petcock vacuum hose. The petcock valve is shut in its default position. That's what keeps the carb from flooding when the engine is off. When you start the bike, vacuum suction from theat rear hose opens the valve and let's fuel flow.

It's possible that hose has come off the petcock. If so, your fix is as easy as putting it back on again.

Good luck. I hope its a easy fix.

close the choke after warm up. turn on the petcock when you ride.

when i run my bike too low on fuel, crap from the bottom of the tank gets into the carb and i have to clean it. run the additive, also take off your carb and see if there is any visible damage or dirt.
