RE: How many miles before an engine needs a rebiuld
I bought my 95 1200 w/ 27k for 5000. I thought I paid a little much for it but wanted it and didnt care. Probably wouldnt pay 5k for that bike. However it is your money and if you feel you have to have that bike then get it done. IMHO you can get more for your money but I could have also. I bought mine from a family member which is why I spent the extra cash to get it. I new it was well taking care of. What ever you decide have fun and ride safe.

Hi Members, Thanks for all the info, MJK i am in oz have been checking the market out and it is pretty hot for resale of Harleys in OZ, an example would be a 1996 softy with a bit of fruit on it for about $19000 aus. Maybe i should look at importing for a side line as it appears there is a lot of difference in price between US ans AU. Have decided not to buy the sporty i looked at as i figure i can still get one with lower milage, if i did by it and then had to rebiuld it i might as well have just bought a lower mileage ride and saved the hassle. Some cheap ones do come along i will wait for another.
Members this is a great forum which is solely due to its members inputs, thankyou, give yourselves a pat on the back. Thanks for your help again. Baldy

I think most of the posters here are in the USA and we have different bike buying economies. Where you are, that may be a fair price. I saw a 100th anniv 1200 in Milwaukee, WI a couple weeks ago for $6k with only about 3500 miles on it. That same bike might be worth $10k in OZ. (All $ would be American $) You'll have to shop your locals or pay to import. Sorry...

RE: How many miles before an engine needs a rebiuld
I have 48,000 miles on my 1999 XL1200S. The only problems I've had are: changed leaking head gaskets 3 times, carb fuel gasket ruptured once (27,000), left fork seal crapped out and lost fork oil (45,000), clutch cable had to be replaced (25,500), primary gasket started leaking tranny fluid (25,000), secondary belt broke (48,000).
Outside of that, nothingelse except the occassional burnt outturn signal bulbs.
