Default Pipes cut in half

O.K. so I just got back from lunch here in sunny California. As I was pulling out of the Jimboy's Tacos parking lot, I hear what sounds like a pumped up 96ci. I then watch in amazement as a gal rides by on an 03 Sporty just like mine. I jump out and catch her at the light. "Nice bike", I say. "Is that a 1200?", I ask. "Nope, it's an 883" she replies. "It sounds awesome!", I tell her. "Thanks, I cut the pipes in half and removed the baffles" she says back. Light changed and we went our seperate ways. From the looks of it, she had SEII's and they did look shorter than mine. Her licence plate was from Tennessee. Just wondering if: A) you are on the forum and B)has anyone else done this? I'm thinking of doing it myself because her bike sounded more bad *** than any other bike I've heard!

To remove the baffles on my SE II's you just undo the bolt on the bottm. Not sure why anyone would want to cut pipes in half? Assuming that she actually did, she would have had to weld them back together and then get them re-chromed...

They really were cut in half. I'm talking about the slip ons, mind you, not the head pipes. I have the baffles removed on my SEII's as well, but what she had done was actually cut her slipons in half right past the spot where they bolt to the bike, making each slipon abought 5-6 inches long.

Just get decent slip ons. I can't believe what people do to their bikes!!!I have seen some that started as awesome looking bikes and now look like freaks!!! Kinda like people that get carried away with tatoos.

I had chiseled out the baffles from my stock mufflers. They sounded pretty good, definatly loud. My problem was there wasn't enough back pressure. I could feel a noticable loss in the low end power.

I've ended up with V&H short shots, They have the big bore sound.

Good luck whatever you do

LOL! My drags with lollipops installed are loud enough to set off car alarms a block away with no or littleloss of power.

My straight pipes on my 883c set off car alarms as well. It sounds like to me, she just have self made drag pipes? p.s. the shorter the pipe the harder it is to tune right.

Well basically. Cutting off pipes is not too smart. Most pipes today are tuned for the bikes.

2007/2008 Sportster,

Two choices:

A-Remove factory slip-ons and use hole saw to cut thru weld at outlet to remove baffles only..... for loud.

B-Remove factory slip-ons and use metal chop saw to slice 1/2" off end of mufflers....Then remove baffles/perforated sleeves and all packing..... for REAL loud.

I chose B on two day old 1200C........andI don't regret it.

Then turn key to run, remove positive bat cable, reattach cable, start bike and ride kinda hard for about 40 miles to "relearn" the ECU.

Then go clean yer pants crotch and grin yourself to sleep....The next morning's ride to work will be lots mo fun.
