Default shimming loose handlebars

after changing handlebars and tightening the new ones to spec I can still move them up and down. has anyone ever had this happen? what would you use to shim these tight? the bars I installed are new so it's not a wear issue. i have heard of people shimming handlebars but don't know what they used. anyone out there got any clue on this?

I've made shims for that by cutting a couple of strips from an aluminium soda (beer)can.

Did you put 1" diameter or 7/8" diameter bars on?

Are the new bars you have not knurled? In other words....are they smooth where they clamp, if they're smooth shimming will only help a little as they need to be roughed up or grooves ground in them to give the clamp something to hold on to.

they're 1 " bars and risers and they are knurled. I'm going to change to a different set of risers( a modified capttawes set up to be exact)and if that doesn't fix it then it's soda can shim time. thanks for the tip cHarley....................Salzy

I have had this in the past.

ACE is the place.

Some rubber stock, maybe some longer bolts.

The guy that said to use a strip of a pop can is correct. All you need is a small 1/2" x 3/4" piece of aluminum or tin, lay it on topof the handle bar and put the clamp on top of itand they will tighten right up. Had this problem on my Road King, fixed it right up.

Great minds think a like... though I used a soda can....

I promise no one can tell... I sanded all the red paint off the can before I installed them....[8D]
