I have a zerk fitting on the neck on my '96. It seems that I get grease oozing outta the bottom all of the time. Usually takes one or two pumps. maybe check your grease gun and maybe try changing the fitting as well. 40 pumps seems like alot.

 

I cant believe it, I just went out and decided to pump until grease came out. I only got up to 7 pumps and out come grease at the bottom.
I would say I have a total of about 37 to 40 pumps of grease in to the neck.
Must be about 2 lbs of grease in that thing. Well I think Im good to go now.
Some of us are going up to the Mt.Pleasant Mi. H.D. dealer this saterday around noon, so if any one from this Forum isgoing that way, just look for a black 00 1200-C outside and I will be close by...Gary.
