I went with Mobil 75-90 SYN ---BUTTTTTT!!!
I have a 2007, 1200C with 4200 miles and love it. After reading all the threads on using Mobil in the primary instead of the HD oil I went and done it. My question is, I caught what came out, measured it and it was only 29oz. Everywhere I read I found that it should of been 32oz. I went ahead and put 32 back in. Advice: Do you think this will be ok?I didn't want tohave to pull the derby cover to look at the level if I don't have to. Thanks in advance.

Being the second primary fluid change I'd say you're fine. But, I have recently learned, the accumulation of draining less than 32 oz, and replacing with 32 oz will add up over time. Look for an upcoming post on lessons learned from my clutch problems.
I can't make the post now....'cause I'm still learnin.

Hmmm. I've changed tranny oil twice (once with engine oil, second time with 70-90). The manual shows the level it should be at in there (with the bike straight and level) and warns not to overfill. Both times I pulled the cover and filled it to that level and both times it didn't take all 32 oz. Wasn't a big deal.

I think you guys are getting hung up on the language... sure it say not to over fill...
But if you drained the old oil... and you took a 32 oz container filled with new oil... how much can it be over-filled... an ounce or two over is not gonna blow up the bike... I'd be willing to bet it would be pert'near perfect...
If you think a service department measures the old oil to make sure they get every drop... got news for you... if you do it yourself... it probably gets it a whole lot closer to perfect than a dealer does... IMHO!!!

Sportsters don't hold 32Oz's they hold about 29 like you found (at least older ones). You are suppose to fill the primary until it reaches the proper depth on the clutch pack, overfilling doesn't hurt it just makes it not shift as nice and it's harder to find neutral. Get an owners manuel and read it, it shows howfull to fill the primary. After I read it and drained out some fluidall my shifting problems when away and neutralwas no longerhard to find.

Is that why my gears sound like they are hitting so hard? Makes me cringe when I downshift! I'm running HD oil maybe I should go with Synthetic.

I had the same issue with my 96 1200. The extra 3 ozis residual oil. If you took the primary case off and cleaned everything with solvent, then you would need the whole 32 oz. No big deal, if you added 32 oz on the second change, barring any leaks, you should get 32 oz out at the next change. The 3 oz difference does not accumilate. If you happen to overfill it and add 40 oz, you'll drain40 the next time and still have the 3oz residual. I used Coastal syn-blend 75-90 and put over 50K on my sporty.
