Default Warning - ******'s Air Box Mod

DON'T EVER DO THIS TO YOUR BIKE!!!!

I checked my plugs when I got it and saw that I was (oddly enough) a little rich. Put in new plugs and ran them a few hundred miles and noticed that I was still a little rich. I figured I just needed to get a little more air in there to fix the mixture, so I modified my stock air box as per ******'s instructions this afternoon and then set out for about an hour long ride.

After the mod, I could not keep that sucker below the speed limit!
You can't come out of a twistie very slowly!
This mod makes your bike accelerate like a rocket, and...
This mod got rid of 70% of the decel cough pop pop cough from the pipes.

So, in conclusion if you like annoying pops from running rich and just average to slightly slugglish performance, don't ever do this to your bike.

As the little warnings at the bottom of the diet pill ad says, results show may not be typical.

Looks like I have some new work to do this week. That thing already runs like a top, but more air can't hurt...I'll report back with results when completed...

Here are a few images that may help you get an idea of what needs to be done:

Take the stock airbox completely off the bike and cut the backing plate so that all you are keeping is the breather mounting area and the carb mounting area. It should look like this when you put it back on:

With the stock air filter attached:

Now the stock chrome cover goes back on. It is no longer a sealed cover, so you don't need the rubber gasket on it. It is now more of a lid then a cover.

In all seriousness, it really, really, really woke my bike up.

Yes that looks like a great idea, but here's what i did,i took a 2 1/2 hole saw and made two holes through the back plate on either side of the lower part, made a huge difference was very easy, and the way i see it the carb throat can only flow a certain amount of air, and with three holes to pull air thru i feel its got to be close to as much as the carb can pull. just my .02

an internal combustion engine operates on a balance of heat fuel and oxygen . if you change one side of the equation you have to change the other two . yes you can cut holes in your air box and drill out your baffles and you will think you have done an amazing thing but your dead wrong. do yourself a favor spend the money and buy a high flow air filter , free flowing pipes that have something to hold back pressure and re-jet or re-map. as with anything else there is no such thing as a free lunch and I can assure you down the line you will pay.

It also may be noted...

If you are running at or near normal air/fuel mix... increasing air flow will lean the motor out...

Which does bring up performance, but also increases combustion temp...

A piston will fry at 1325 degress... the higher the rpms, and duration at which it is held there the more likely the motor can reach these exhaust temps...

These temps are measured just as the gases come out of the head, not at the end of the exhaust, so measuringtemps at the end of the exhaust would do you no good and would be very misleading...

Too lean is not good!!! Yeah itcan improve performance, but be careful of the cost...

Note:

These comments come from the book of "What I haveDone and What I Have Learned" published by the school of Hard Knocks...

Looks like a good alternative to the S/E high flow A/C.
