Yeah that looks like a duo glide or some other type of FL that James Dean is on. And ifthe bike Elvis was on was a '56 (which it's not) itwould have been a K model which is what the sportster replaced.
This my father and his'55 k taken in1968.

Ok, I don't think the James Dean and Marilyn bike is a Sportster, this one has a tank dash. And Elvis on a '56 Sportster???? Pretty tough unless it is a prototype since the Sportster's first production year was 1957. Cool pics though.

If you look closly in the pic you may be able to see the distributor from a Ford 8N tractor fitted in place of the stock problematic ignition system. The old man said that it worked great and dropped right in and he just used two of the four connectors and insulated the other two with extra spark plug boots he had laying around.
I hear alot of people complaining about their bikes today and how they don't wanna pull a choke lever to start their bikes. Makes mewonder how they would have survived at all back in the days where you had to be able to throw around a wrench or two to use anything motorized....

RE: Remember when....
I looked it up in one of my Harley History books and the Elvis bike is definitely a 56 KH. It isn't a KHK since the "hot rod" KHK had a very minimal solo seat on it and the "California style" bars which were raised (almost)buckhorn type bars. They came with an 883cc flathead engine, and telescoping front suspension in addition to a "long traval' swingarm rear suspension.
Alsonote the airhorn on the side.Sure beats the weak honda type horns on the 883's of today.
