I remember the old handgrips. They were either black or while thicker than the stock ones now with chrome plugs in the ends.

According to the history books (aka Harley website)

1957

The motorcycling public met a new motorcycle called the Sportster®. It premiers as a 55 cubic inch overhead valve engine, and within one year of its debut, becomes known as the first of the "Superbikes." Another Harley-Davidson tradition and legend is born.
Didn't know you rode a "superbike" did you?

Ok, I don't think the James Dean and Marilyn bike is a Sportster, this one has a tank dash. And Elvis on a '56 Sportster???? Pretty tough unless it is a prototype since the Sportster's first production year was 1957. Cool pics though.

Yeah that looks like a duo glide or some other type of FL that James Dean is on. And ifthe bike Elvis was on was a '56 (which it's not) itwould have been a K model which is what the sportster replaced.
This my father and his'55 k taken in1968.
