Default XL883 (lots of upgrades) or Stock 1200C

I'm buying a new HD and I'm torn between looks and performance. I can't decide if I'm going to purchase a 2005 XL 883 and install the new black ghost flame numbered paint package, chrome wheels, forward controls and screaming eagle pipes or purchase a stock black 1200C for the same price.

I am inclined to buy the customized 883 and develop the performance later rather than having a quick 1200 custom that looks just like all the rest. Given that the XL883 is an inch taller than the 1200C it is actually a bit more comfortable as I am 6'. What does everyone else think?

I'd appreciate the help!

I have the 04 883C. I have no performance gripes against it. The custom models already have forward controls on them.
I am 6'4 and am very comfortable on it. The Screaming Eagles are a good idea cause I think the stock pipes are a bit quiet.
If you want to upgrade the performance in the future try this link for a 85ci (1400cc) big bore kit.

Thanks for the responses!

Johnny,

As I have been shopping for my bike I have found it to be amusing that dealers/salespeople have told me that I look to big for the bike. All the while trying to upsell me to a 1200 Custom which is actually an inch (or so) shorter. Some have gone on to tell me that the 883 "wouldn't get me across train tracks" and that it "struggles to keep up on the highway". Any truth?

The 800 and below market is very popular (japanese, triumph, etc.). I find it hard to believe that the 883 is inferior.

Thanks again for the reply and the link. Hope to hear back again soon!

The dealers are just going for the upsale. The only difference between the 883 & 1200 is in the engine (1200 has some buell components in it) and tranny gear ratios. The 883 & 1200 chassis is identical.
I have had the bike up to 90mph, been on a few short road trips and have found no problems keeping pace.

Wonder what the difference in weight betwixt the two is. Any performance you may lose may be gained in the fact it doesn't weigh as much...

I am not sure where you are located, but there are some folks out here in West Texas that have a 2003 883 for sale for $8,500. It is loaded and a great looking bike.

Hey Guys,

Still torn but I am leaning towards the power. The bikes are essentially the same with the excpetion of the more powerful engine. I just still haven't convinced myself the power is needed.

What do you think of the 1200 Roadster? It is kind of a middle ground for me as I can still afford to make a couple of modifications to make the bike my own.

The pricing in my area is as good as I've seen. The 2005 XL 883 is selling for around $6,800 and the 2005 1200 customs are selling for about $9,900.00 out the door. There are six HD dealers within a 60-70 minute radius surrounding my house. Lots of competition!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions!

$3100 is a lot of money between the two. Personally I go the 883 route, and get it bumped to a 12 or 1400. For that money you can buy alot of engine parts after the fact.
