Default Need More Education (running lean)

I know my Sportster is running lean. I talked with the stealership about this and they told me the EPA makes them set them that way, but for $120 they can remap theEFI. Sounds like BS to meif Iam having a problem running too lean they need to fix it underwarranty. I understand carburetors but EFI has me stumped. Where can I get more education on remapping? I get lost when you guys are talking SERT, dyno programs, PC III,etc. Do they make a plug and play chip that can be tweaked to how I ride, then changed for pipes and air later?
Thanks
Marty

I also get lost with all the remap type conversations. And from what I have gathered, so do the stealers. But as far as the lean condition being a warranty issue, it is not. The warranty covers (supposedly) the bike to be at factory specs. Since the factory specs are for the bike to run lean, this isn't a warranty issue.

The government (EPA) dictates that the MoCo build the bikes lean to satisfy their emmissions regulations. Thus, the term "Harley Tax". This is money you hafta to spend to undo the damage the government inflicts in the manufacturing process of our bikes.

SportyPig is right about the EPA situation. The HD remap is really only designed for a bike that is upgraded to Stage 1 using the SE pipes & SE A/C. Of you going to use other pipes, A/C's and do additional upgrages, you need a programable module like the SERT, PCIII, etc. One of the best (most promising) units I have heard of is the ThunderMax. It seems to have the ability to "tune itself" as you make changes. The new ThunderMax replaces your current ECM. Many of the other units work in conjunction with your stock ECM.
