Default Mechanical speedo drive on later Sportsters

Odd question perhaps but has anyone retrofitted a mechanical speedo drive to a later (2000-on) model? It’s for a one-off build, using later front end parts and electric is not an option. I did a search but no joy, I’m hoping this has been covered before?

Cheers

It has probably been done by someone, but I'm not sure.

You will need the following parts : -

MPH Speedometer clock unit with wiring, 67037-91.
Speedometer drive unit, 67127-84A.
Speedometer cable, 67063-98.

Also note that the front wheel spindle diameters have changed over the years, as have the wheel spacers. Up to 2007 the front wheel spindle was 3/4" diameter, in 2008 it changed to 25mm diameter. A 2007 or earlier wheel spindle will fit the speedometer drive unit as they are both 3/4" diameter.

You might also need to buy the earlier speedometer housing binacle and fittings, but I'm not sure about that.

Good luck.

If you are trying to use the least amount of attachments/wires then perhaps a GPS speedometer?
Research online.
Just need power.
Remember no speed signal in tunnels.

Do you really need the speedo? I haven't run a speedometer on my sporty in, well, I've never had a speedo on mine. I don't think there are any states that require one, but I'm not sure. California doesn't and it's usually the most oppressive when it comes to rules and regulations.

The OP like myself lives here in the UK where any vehicle with a top speed of over 25 mph by law must have some type of speedometer so that they are aware of their speed at all times. I have known riders who've quite legally installed GPS pedal cycle computers on their motorcycle.
