Hard to say on cost as its usually the diagnosis that seems to take the most time in situations like this. I'd strongly advise trying your hand at turning a wrench.

Maybe not in this case but you'll want to be able to take care of the little things that pop up.

Eventually this would be an easy job.

 

If you don't know if your bike is carbed or fuel injected sell it, or let the dealer do all the work. You are not up to this.

in 2006 harleys had Is the end of the model which told you if fuel injected. People should learn the alphabet. In 2007 all harleys were fuel injected and they dropped the Is.

 

Nice thing about the carb is usually you can just take it off and go through the whole thing, replace all the intake seals and 9 times out of 10 your golden.

 

There's always time to learn. Find a good indy shop, get a manual and keep watching videos and I thinknyou will be in good shape.

 

And again, don't go to the dealer! They're like sharks and if they get the sense you don't know anything about the bike mechanically, it's like blood in the water. A feeding frenzy on your bank account.

 

My Road King was doing the exact same thing and it was the speed sensor.
Pulled it out and cleaned it and it got better for a while then did it again. So I replaced the speed sensor and fixed the problem.

My Road King was fuel injected.

I don’t know if a carb bike has a speed sensor though.
