RE: Drag racing my new sporty
i remember reading somewhere that an o4 up will run stock(and tested with a 220 pound rider) 12.9 seconds..10's or 11's would be with alot of work done..but i wouldnt see a problem with mine getting somewhere in the mid 12's with me at 165 pounds..with the stage 1 and screamin eagle ignition module..i would almost be willing to place money on it..and might just try it out at the local track come springtime..
Now if you are a crappy rider you can take a stage 1 1200 and only run high 13's or low 14's.

How much did that particular build cost you and how much hp is it making?
The picture in my avitar is a 96" Ironhead. She will turn 9.9 all day long on c-16. Change the carb, advance the timing, dump in a 75% load of nitro.....8.5!
Though HP and torque IS important, The idea of dyno work is to smooth out the powerband from launch to peek (tune out dead spots), and to determine shift points. Dyno tuning is another story.
As far as cost to build a bike like this, the motor/trans would be 5-6K, the frame would be about 2-3K. Then factor in front end, wheels, shifter, blah, blah, blah.
The bike only weighs 400 lbs. (Meets the 4 lbs per cubic inch rule)
This is a great bracket bike. It is not really competitive in the top gas or prostock ranks, and I know that. The only way I can qualify in a race with those guys is if there is a breakage or a short field. Those guys run high sixes to mid 8's all day, on gas. Those guys are running motors that are turning ot 300-350 HP. Those bikes new cost up to $100,000. But I give them hell, though, and have a lot of fun, as I watch them go by me!
For those interested, there are a lot of these bikes laying around in garages and old shops around the country, and can be had at a reasonable price. They come in Ironhead and Shovel configurations (which can be switched to early Evo Sportster or Evo Big Twin) They come in one off frames like mine or with Truitt tankers or Nungasser frames.
For those of you who are going to Sturgis this year, You will see a lot of these old dragsters come out of the woodwork for a Nostalgia Fuel race. Make sure you catch it. We've been invited, but due to costs, we can't make it.
All of this being said, my original point to the gent out running his '07 was to save the '07, get a older Sportster to ring out. Fun can turn to shear disappointment when you destroy your only street bike. The Sportster motor is the greatest bracket bike around. It is consistant. Period. It's only week point is the trans/clutch. My wife has a '06 1200 and I'm impressed how well it runs in stock configuration.

I'd like to see a near stock (stageI or so) sporty run in the mid 12s... anyone here done it?

My 04 GTO with Heads/Cam/Exhaust/Tune ran 12's. I wanted to go faster and now am in the process of putting in a 416CI L92 that should be at 500rwhp plus a 150shot putting me around 650rwhp. That should be good for low 11's high 10's with a solid launch....but that is 30K later with that I already had invested in the original block!!!!!
Drag racing is addicting and expensive.
I wonder if I can get the N into the mid 12's..............???????????????????????????????? ???????
What are VRODS running in the 1/4th, can't be too much better than a stage 1 sportster, I say that because of weight.
