No it wouldn't. That was my thought as well.

So it's completely apart. The rods seem fine to me. A little side play but no up and down movement. Heads and cylinders look good. No marks indicating contact between the cylinders and pistons. Pinion gear keyway is still in one piece. No marks on the case indicating contact from the CAMS. Nothing really stands out. Maybe it actually is a lifter. I still need to test those out later tonight.

There is quite a bit of up and down play on the oil pump shaft but I am pretty sure that is normal. I'll have to double check that.

Checked the run out on the pinion side and am at 0.004 at the crankshaft tip. Max is supposed to be 0.003 at the pinion so I think I am still in acceptable shape there.

Well. Lifter it is. Tested them and one of them was taking a long time to leak down, then popped and collapsed while testing it. My guess is this is why I was getting inconsistent tapping then occasionally backfiring and dying. This little bugger seems to be the culprit.

Right on! Seems like you found the source of your noises. Congratulations.

Got all the gaskets and parts needed to get the motor back together ordered today, so we'll see how long all that takes to arrive. I feel like I am always waiting for parts to arrive.

My new favorite tool. This Installs the wire locks for the piston wrist pins. On the CP pistons it is a nightmare to install the wire locks as they are such a tight fit. Took me many hours the first time around. This tool does it in 30 seconds.

Not cheap, but cheaper than other options I found and works perfectly.

Back in about 1975 I remember taking a box of a few hundred flat tappet Chevy lifters to two old retired ladies up in Mizpah MN to be rebuilt. Yes, they rebuilt them as good as new!

Got everything I need except the primary cover back from powder. If I get that this week I can get the motor all back together on Saturday and take it for a spin.
