Default 70900274 Tach/Speedo replacement

Hey all!

I have a 2005 883C that I blew out the speedo by jumping the bike. (yeah, yeah, I know).

Any way, I was wondering if any one has changed their speedo out with this replacement from HD (like in a sportster in the 2004-2006 range). I was wondering if someone has a manual left over for it they might be willing to scan and email to me. I am trying to figure out if I have to run a wire for the tach or is it already in the plug up to the factory speedo (or does it come in some other way to the speedo?).

I was going to buy a replacement factory speedo but right now I am looking at 2 months for that to come in, so I was thinking about this one. Also, I read in a couple places that you have to have the old speedo to transfer the odometer (which I can't do because my old one blows the battery fuse every time I plug it in).

I just want to make sure this will work before I shell out the money.....

Thanks

I don't think the older bikes automatically transfer miles once they are connected, so it's why they ask what you want it read. I recently ordered a XR1200X tach for my 2013, mileage shows on tach. Bike had 7,000 ish miles on it so I said put 7,000 on it.

Supposed to be up to a three month wait, but I received it in three weeks.

edit: you don't need to have the old speedo to order a new one!

Info here:- https://www.harley-davidson.com/gb/e...ter/p/70900274

Installation instructions here:- https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....1?locale=en_GB

Wiring diagram here:- https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....t/view?id=5532

The information the speedo needs is in the datalink wire so no you don't need to run any wires.

Thank you for that information!!

So I guess I am out of luck. According to the instructions. I have to attach the new speedo to the datalink connector down by the battery, turn on the bike and then it reads the old data from the old speedo and transfers the information to the new speedo. Problem is as soon as I connect the old speedo, it blows the battery (15A) fuse. So I guess my only choice is to order the factory speedo and have them set the milage.

I believe it gets the odometer data from the ECM not the speedo.

I'm not sure where the "ECM" is. I only know of the TSM, Ignition Module and the Speedo.

I would really hate to spend $400 only to find out the old speedo is needed for it to work. I do know that when you buy a factory replacement speedo you have to have them program the mileage prior to shipping it to you. I might understand that to mean the mileage is stored in the speedo (which has the code reader for diagnostics if I'm not mistaken).

I do appreciate the help. I am just trying to make sure I won't waste my money.

Sorry was thinking of the bike here that does have ECM. Yours has the ignition control module that drives the data link.

I just went through this at the dealer ordering a new tach. Parts guy told me the mileage figure is only a formality and it could be whatever I wanted it to be.

APPARENTLY, these bikes were not made to be jumped because I did the same flying out of a round a bout and my needle exploded.

I bet had I just connected the battery and NOT started my truck, it would have been ok. I think the extra voltage was a bad thing.
