Primary noise
Hello
new member go easy.
Bought a 98 sporster 2 weeks ago. Long story short found some milky oil. Bike had been sitting for a few years when I bought it. Changed the primary and motor oil today. Now it seems there's a "metal roller skate" type noise. I only got it up to 3rd and drove it a football fields length or so. Also seemed to be real clunky when in gear, like losing power or could stall out.
It seems to happen when going back to neutral. Neutral Is hard to find, at least today. It wasnt last week. Put in cheaper oil, well it was all o reillys had. Planned on changing it all again in a a few weeks anyways. Wondering if I could've put too much in or not enough? Again no noise before. Put the full quart in.
Just weird it all seemed fine, to someone that's never rode a harley, before I changed the oil. Any thoughts or advice welcome.
edit: my plan for tomorrow, find some better oil and change it again. Are you supposed to have the bike level or on the kick stand when checking the primary?
I changed motor oil, filter, primary and spark plugs today. 20w-50, primary stuff said "wet clutch protection"

"Wet clutch protection" primary oil? My Wife and I have 3, my 07 Dyna, Her 04 XLH1200C and OUR 1977 XLH 1000. I've been getting my Mobil 1 20w50 at Oreilleys for over 15 years. Being familiar with what Oreilleys sells, I safely say THEY DO NOT HAVE SUITABLE TRANS FLUID FOR A SPORTSTER. Go to a dealer and get HD Primary/gear oil . . . AND adjust the primary chain slack.
