I think my biggest concern is the 4 speed. I will ride this bike if I get it anywhere and everywhere just maybe not as fast and comfy as everyone else. But hey, that’s part of the draw for me. It’s not cookie cutter. It’s old, it can be worked in easily and they are not a dime a dozen. And personally, I love the thought of showing up and sayin I actually rode it.

I think that is a $2,500 (or less) motorcycle.
The 883 models were less than 4 grand when new in `87.
It`s not a collector's item, it`s just a 36 year old vehicle.
You say you aren`t concerned about comfort, have you ridden a Harley Davidson that has a solid mounted engine?

My buddy bought a new 1990 model, I waited and bought a 1991, with 5 speed transmission, improved stator design, self cancelling turn signals (don't have to hold them on!),
1987 has clutch and stator integrated, issues with that system are possible, dislodged magnets, wobbling clutch shell are two I have read about.

This is about right depending on where you live. Maybe upwards of $3k where I live in California as prices have gone up. I paid $2500 for my 2003 883 4 years ago but it is hard to compare prices over years.
In my opinion you have to look at a bike that old and try and get it as cheap as possible with the idea you will likely have to go through the entire bike and may have a lot of wear items to replace, like tires, bearings, brakes, cables, chains, bushings, seals, gaskets, hoses, and anything electrical. Age means more than mileage. I know of a lot of people who got great deals on low mile bikes that sat in a garage for 20 years only to realize that all the soft parts were rotten. My bike looked great until I pulled the front end. All the bearings/bushings needed replacement and thus began what ended up being a total frame up rebuild as the more I dug the more I found.
I'd get it as cheap as I could and have fun.

I have not ridden a 4 speed but if you want old iron, I guess you have to get over it and ride the 4 spd.
I personally like the paint job on this one. It was owned by a local HD technician and it will need tires. He will let it go for $3000. Probably a little high.
I am just curious is I unreasonable to think that I can ride this bike on trips ( even if I’m slow and have to stop more) ?
what kind of mileage could you expect out of that tank?
