Default Help with my new project - gauge swap on 1998 sportster

Hey all,

I just picked up a 1998 Sportster 883 with an S&S shorty carb setup for a steal. Didn’t run when I bought it, but I was able to get her running with new battery, plugs, and fixing some broken wires. Anyway, the bike has dual gauges on it (Speedometer and Tachometer). However, only the tachometer is working. Close look at the speedometer shows that the LCD part in the gauge looks damaged. Pins all look good.

My question: Can I just buy a used gauge on eBay and plug it into the bike? I know that my newer bikes (2015 RK, 2014 EG Ultra) would have a VINERR message if you try this. However, I am hoping that the 1998 sporty wont be an issue since it’s a mechanical speedo.

Please let me know before I pull the trigger and order a new gauge.

Thanks in advance!
