Default wondering about carb

Ok guys I have 68 xlch and it has a cv carb on it now #is 27490-96A now I had just purchased this bike the problem I am having is when I go to kick it over it is firing and a little smoke comes out of the carb/ airceaner I pulled the plugs and they were a little wet but black. Now I had called the Harley dealer and asked them if they had maybe a hotter plug he told me I have to becarefull which plug I run in this because it could do damage to the piston. I am running a autolite 216 plug in it now well then he had asked me about what kind of carb I told him and he said that is your problem. Now dont get me wrong I am a noob to all of this bike stuff he told me the carb is to big for the bike. He told me when I pull them plugs they should be a tan color. He said a makuni cab 38mm would be the rite carb for this bike easy starting I am lost here guys any help would be great here are some pics of the carb thats on there

A tan coloured plug is when you do a plug chop at high revs and cut the engine...your problem could be anything.....i'd start at engine timing and points.

even if the carb is a little big you can always jet it down right? I am leaning more towards the timing though (firing while it is while the valves are still open on the intake stroke).

I can't argue with the manual on this although, even on small magneto engines, like lawn mowers etc. the typical gap is usually .025.
