Issues with oil pressure light and metal in oil
Hello all,
I originally posted in the generic forum for mechanical issues but thought I'd bring it here. I have an iron 883 and stored it for winter after I noticed the oil pressure light come on and the bike felt very sluggish. When I went to start it last week it sounded very bad and I got a bunch of codes. Eventually changed the oil and found what seemed like metal in the oil. It runs non-synchronously and shuts down out of nowhere after about a minute with a little metallic scrape noise. Not good obviously. I linked the other forum thread if you want the full back story, but I am wondering if other sportster owners had their oil pump fail after only 2k miles on the bike. I bought it from a dealership and put maybe 400 miles on it before this issue occurred and really am pissed off about it. Essentially it runs for a minute before shutting itself off, metal in oil after oil change, oil pressure light on when running, not diagnosed yet but I'm suspicious of the oil pump. Another question, would the 883 to 1200 conversion kit possibly be a way to repair any scraping damage done with the rings and the cylinder walls? The kit comes with the block, head, piston, piston rings, and everything and if the metal is from the cylinder, I see this as a cheap way around a whole new engine.

First you need to figure out why there is metal in the oil. If it is in fact the top end, yes boring out the cylinders will (likely)fix the damage to your cylinders.
Going from 883 bore to 3.48"/3.5" bore is taking quite a bit of material out

I'm suspecting that it's from a failed oil pump, but I wouldn't be boring the cylinder, it is a kit that harley sells Screamin' Eagle Sportster 883CC to 1200CC Conversion Kit - 29784-07 | Harley-Davidson USA. I do plan on having the failure diagnosed by harley hoping they will do it for free since I bought the bike less than a year ago from them. The kit comes with the block, heads, and pistons.
