Default Sportster 1988 Exhaust / Headers

hello,

i have a 1988 Sportster.
I'm looking for an accessory exhaust or headers .... unfortunately I can't find that many parts for the old Sportster in Germany.

may also fit another exhaust or the headers guide of other Harleys with EVO engine (Softtail, EVO, ...)?

thanks.
Best regards

Hello,

Due to the difference in the size of the Big Twin motor and the Sportster motor, unfortunately Big Twin header pipes won't fit on a Sportster.

I have a pair of stock Sportster header pipes that are for 2004 to 2013 models, they have the O2 sensor holes but I have stainless steel threaded bungs that I can include with the header pipes.

I'm looking for £30.00 plus whatever the postage charge is from the UK to Germany, if you are interested just let me know and I'll look them out and take some photos of them for you.

I'm fairly sure they'll fit the earlier Sportster Evolution models.

If you have the stock "H" pipes and some decent slip on mufflers, you won't find a much better combo to make as good horsepower as you're gonna get. Unless you get a good 2-1 system, the "H" pipes work better than most aftermarket products.

Hey and thanks for your answers!

yes, affordable big twins exhaust systems are like a dime a dozen.

also the exhaust system for the Sportster from 2004 onwards. I have read several times that the exhaust system from 2004 does not fit the older ones. from 2004 the motor would be rubber-mounted / dampened and thus there would be a different guidance from the headers !?
I do not know if thats true.

the headers with the H are very rarely available inexpensively. I have now installed drag pipes and they are a bit loud, I am currently trying DB Killer, but I haven't got anything sensible yet.

aren't these 2in2 systems better in terms of performance? each cylinder has its own pipe and there is almost no back pressure.

the interference tube, as it is called in German, is usually optically removed.

why does a 2in1 perform better than a 2in2?

Thanks

Your first sentence seems logical, until you test that theory in the real world.

Two advantages to the "H" pipes are less reversion and better cylinder scavenging. 2 into 2 pipes are the worst solution for both, with poor midrange performance common. 2 into 1 pipes are the best combo of anti-reversion and cylinder scavenging.

S&S published some information about this issue, as has Hammer Performance. Here's Hammer's test results:

Hello John

Thank you for the information.!

I have to read the S&S article when I have some time.

now one more question.
do the new exhausts from 2004/2005 fit on the old Sportsters with EVO engine (1988)?
or do you know something that the headers collide somewhere?

thank you

I think they will fit, but you must make a bracket to hold them to the frame. They are designed to be mounted to the engine I think with the "rubber mount" bikes.. I know some members have done it, but not sure how they fit the crossover (it's down by mufflers now). Good luck.
