Duke Out on the Cheap: Iron 883 vs. Scout Sixty
By Bruce Montcombroux

Side-by-side riding shows both bikes are fairly equally matched.

Not equal at all. If you desire the enjoyment of owning a Harley and broad dealership availability, then 883. If you desire performance, comfort, smoothness, then Scout.

no comp, at all.

The scouts crush the the Evo sporty(unmodded). The new sportys(stock) will probably be crush contenders.

If it's your first bike, In this case get the scout.
883 as a first bike is so cliche

I thought the Scout was a beautiful bike, but next to the Sportster it looks much less appealing. One of the main problems with the Scout (and the Super Chief) is that the fenders look like they came from a Chinese clone manufacturer. What's with the flat sides and the blunt shift from the curve topped to the flat sides? There's no transition. The Sporster also has the much better looking engine and the aftermarket is massive. The Scout does have liquid cooling and more power though.

I have both - a 2016 Iron and a 2017 Scout. Beyond price, there really is not a fair comparison. The HD beats the Scout hands down in parts/accessories, both from the manufacturer and from third parties. This is well-known, but is still frustrating on my Indian side of the garage. In fact, I just learned that krome werks stopped making exhaust for the Scout because of very low market penetration. I really like my Indians, but the last four bikes I bought have been HD

I can't see Indians getting any more popular until they expand their dealership network. And I don't see that happening anytime soon because the sales aren't there to justify it. The only Indian dealer within and hour of me closed in 2018 and no others have opened. The closest Indian dealer to me at this time is right at 1 hour away. No way I'd ever buy a motorcycle from a company where the closest dealership is that far away. Indian needs to stop trying to be Harley and get rid of the standalone stores. Indians should be sold wherever the rest of the Polaris products are sold. And I don't know about anywhere else in the country, but the amount of Polaris dealerships has certainly dwindled over the years.

I agree - Indian has put a huge burden on dealers with their requirements for selling the Indian bikes. I know all dealers do this to some extent, and HD is maybe even the worst, but HD has a completely different market position. Indian is a great brand with awesome engines, but the aftermarket support and even OEM accessories are just not close to HD (one area where Indian oddly excels for me is in their riding jackets I like that Indian has pushed HD into taking risks that they may have otherwise been slow to adopt, so as usual, competition helps the consumer. It would be good to just acknowledge the limitations and try to address through broader access to the product....but since this is an HD forum, I will say that I think the MOCO is making some brave moves into new space and other than the uncertainty of my LW, the evolution of the sporty platform is necessary. I just hope that they offer a sportster model in the 10K range

Performance is fine, but how many even use the 883 Sportster to full potential. Despite what active members of a forum might do, the vast majority, that aren't buying crotch rocket superbikes, just aren't drag racers/road racers. As sales numbers show, many even opt for the vast aftermarket of Harley anyway. Sorry, Indians are just fugly to boot and I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop back to concentrate more on the ATV, Off-road market in the near future.

As for a $10,000 Sportster, I see those coming soon, the new engine has been shown for some smaller sizes, most notably the Bronx with the 975cc as well as a 500cc and a 750cc also have been mentioned.

Can't comment about 12" Z bars vs what you have now.
I do know that you'll need longer cables with the swap.

Maybe a local dealer has a Sportster with some "apes" you can try for size... go for a ride before winter.

Lastly, seems like you have just joined the wonderful world of motorcycling
Have fun; after decades and decades of riding (okay, 1/2 century truly), I still enjoy my Sportster

FWIW comments from me: Gravity and physics...two wheelers tip over. You are invisible...everyone is trying to crash into you.
