Default 1200 Sportster for a newbie

I am 310 pound's and 6'2", I bought a 2016 Harley Sportster 1200 Custom. I am new and take the beginner course in a couple weeks. I purchased the bike before researching anything and the dealership did not say much of course when buying it.

My question is - is this going to be to much bike for a beginner like me? I thought with my weight and height it might be ok but I am researching all over and have found a lot of sites that say it is not a good bike to start with. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

Thank you so much

its difficult to say. It really depends on the person. Size wise, you shouldn't have a problem with the weight of the bike. As far as "too much bike" for you...it will come down to your skill level and confidence. If you're new to riding as a novice, then I don't think it will be too much. In fact, the size of your bike might help you develop your riding skills and confidence because you won't have to put much focus on the bike being too big or heavy for you. If you're talking about power, the 1200 has more than enough. Just don't ride beyond your abilities. Control is in your clutch, and be mindful of your throttle.

If you're comfortable with it and can control it, then its not a problem for you. Some may say it might be too small ergonomically for you, but again, its all about the individual.

good luck!

The 1200 sporty is both a beginners bike and a bike for seasoned riders the low power and low topend it is good for beginners the fact that it is top heavy is for more seasoned riders get or keep mid controls til you get miles logged before ya get forward controls

If you have some general driving experience, and considering your height and weight, you will be fine.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm 1/2 foot shorter than you and I bought a new Sporty 1200 Custom after I took the H-D riding class. It took me a couple of weeks to break in the 1200 and got use to riding. I rode 250 - 300 miles regularly after a month of riding. A year later, I bought a Road King. This was 10 years ago, and I ride both bikes regularly. No I don't think the 1200 is too much bike for you. Good luck with the riding class.

I too think you will be okay with the 1200.

I could recommend finding a flat parking lot and practicing some straight-line braking.

Welcome and have fun.,
