Did you have both spark plugs out and grounded against the heads?
The EFI Sportsters (07 and later) will not fire the spark plugs while cranking unless the ECU detects a slowing of the crankshaft from the compression stroke.
You can use spare plug(s) (or a spark tester) to check for spark while cranking the engine with the existing plugs still installed in the heads.
