Default Max torque sporty !

As my riding miles accrue and the preference becomes clear I have come to realise that for me torque matters esp in the low and midrange.

what is the max torque you guys have seen a sportster put out ? The 100 bhp peak is not what I am after - any inputs will be appreciated including the build

Hi! I remember from another topic, that you have to shift up late on higher speeds. Do you have “stretched” ratio on the sprockets?

I have a custom 1200 setup with a stage 1 kit (DIY). No change to gear or sprocket. Just looking to up the torque figures primarily with a lesser emphasis on the top end.

Ace, you are man after my own heart. I couldn't agree more that 'torque matters' most in terms of engine performance (at least, on a cruiser).

The most complete and awesome information on torque (and BHP) I've found is on the Hammer Performance website, especially the Hopping Up an XL1200 Sportster page. The offer some great information, including many dyno results, like this:

It shows 1250 & 1275 torque curves, but they also off crazy 88' and 90' kits... Cosmic!

Just for your information.

Cheers,

Chris

Seems I will have to junk my FP3 and get the 1275 kit with the works for 23 nm torque more

The 1250 or 1275 kit won't work with the FP3? That's good information to get out there, a bummer if you have to scrap it and go to another tuner.

I just did a 1250 build, but my bike is carbureted. The extra 25cc (and 2.3 hp) just did not seem worth the extra $125, which I applied to an upgraded ignition module instead, a much better use of that money IMHO. 900 miles on the bike since the upgrade and everything is absolutely fantastic, no leaks, plenty of power, and lots of torque.

I got way more than my money's worth! The bike is just amazing now.

Hammer is clear about their preferred tuner and the FP3 has some issues with their build.

I had written to hammer and gottten their take on this - it will have to be complete set (makes sense as part upgrades will cost me much more ). My prob is I will have to junk the pipes and the tuner and find an Indy capable to install.
The guy I use is Harley trained and he tried to install an extra plate kit with the spring plate and installed the front suspension (progressive) with the protective plastic tubing on. I was around and thanks to you all and YouTube was able to correct him on the spot. being where I am geographically makes things a bit tough!

Nuff said ! BTW

how much torque did you gain ? What are the pipes on your bike ? A bit more explanation would help.

I have not had the bike on a dyno. I have the original Screaming Eagle mufflers with “H” pipes. SE aircleaner. CV velocity needle and 45/185 jets at 3 1/8 turns out on IMS. Carburetion and plugs seem good. Perhaps Hammer has torques for a basic conversion like mine on their site.
