Default Used bike from hell ... Please help!!!

Ok guys ... Im not sure where to start ... But I bought a 2001 xlh 883 .... Ran like a turd from the beginning ... Didn't even know its was a 1200 until I had a car pulled out and dropped it ... After doing some work noticed it had 1200 jugs and 883 heads ... Sooooo took apart the carb and saw it had a 42/170 ... The slide is drilled wayyyy too big ... The emulsion tube looks diff but not aftermarket ... The needle is a c clip adjustable....The bike ran ok but not well ... Its using the stock ignition which seems like a no no ... I had to put drag pipes on it because of money issues so please don't say its the pipes it had drags b4 .... I bought baffles

After cleaning a reassembling the carb with no changes and a good working knowledge its very rich and coughs through the intake when giving gas .... This is without AC ... I have a dynatek 2000i and lowbrow customs AC ... Has anyone ever heard of a 170 being to rich on a conversion? So many things have been changed and then 883 iggy being in it im not sure what's my next move is

How do you know it's running rich? Carb cough is lean condition. Did you check the color of the spark plugs? Black and sooty will indicate rich, light tan will be lean. Carb cough could be a problem in the accel pump circuit. Drag pipes with baffles need a 44 jet, not a 42 jet. Search "YOST POWER TUBE." Get one.

carb cough/burp is a classic lean condition or intake leak. recommended jets for a 1200 would be 45 pilot jet, and 180 main, but you might need a 185 with straight pipes and that high-flow lowbrow air cleaner. can't speak to the needle clip or emulsion tube being weird. with no pics, i'm not sure what exactly you're working with.

what makes you think it's running rich?

Its got black plugs ... That's what's confusing but I also has it running on the enrichener a lot ... I've order stock 88 needle 45/180 replaced the overdrilled slide ... Adding baffles today ... CV performance emulsion tube ... Ill update after I switch everything ... I was just confused by the coughs with black plugs but I didn't see how 42/170 would work ... I think ditching the BS e clip needle will help

I don't think I can get it to run long enough off the enrichener to get any accurate plug read .... It stumbles right away when u touch the throttle but if I can get past the stumble it absolutely roars ... I've got a 44 and 45 coming and a 180 185 but they mail is trash atm but ill repost after install ... Also knocks noticeably with the stock iggy
