Does it never end!!!!
Picked up an 02 883 today, see "another one in the stable" post in general HD, anyhow, the bike sounds so much better than my 1200.
Mine has the SE torque mufflers and the 883 has the SEII slash cut mufflers. The slash cuts are way more throaty and deep with the classic Harley sound.
The Torques, as I have said before sound good, not too loud but damn, they don't even compare to the slash cuts.
Now I'm going to go get the slash cuts for my 1200 to get that sound, so much for the stock pipe look.
Well I may have a two month old set of slip ons for sale shortly.[:@]

RE: Does it never end!!!!
Doesn't the sound have to do with more of the baffle and how the pipe is designed on the inside rather than how the tips are cut? I wound think the only difference would be slash cuts project the sound downwards whereas the straight cut pipes project the sound directly to the rear....Just wondering.

RE: Does it never end!!!!
My bike came with stock pipes with baffles punched, sounded too raspy for me.
I went with the torques on another riders recommendation and was happy until I heard the pipes on the 883.
Direction of the cut will make a difference in sound as the sound will bounce off the ground making it sound louder.
On the pipes I'm comparing the opening at the end is way different as well, the slash looks to be about 3" and the torques might be 2".
I think the slash or balony cuts get the megaphone effect where as the torques don't.
You are correct in the design of the pipe and baffles affecting the sound quality as well.
I'm going to try to pick up some new slip ons this week, time permitting, and see what happens.
