Default Primary fluid drain & fill

So I’ve got a 03 883, just got it. I’m dropping all three holes and when I take the derby cover off I find a retaining clip sitting at the bottom of the cover. After taking a look I’m not sure where it is from, without tearing in deeper. I admittingly don’t have any manuals yet, they are on the way. In the meantime anybody here have some ideas on what it should go to exactly?

I hate to tell you this but the only retaining clip I know of that looks like that is on the end of the starter Bendix gear . You won't find it in the manual * because HD like to pretend that the gear cannot be separated from the starter clutch . That said , I fail to see how it would function with the clip missing . It's the one on the extreme right . * 04 Roadster .

I hope that’s not the case.. I’m looking a bit closer and I’m thinking it could be the end of the spring. About the same size and on end does look to be smooth while the other broken.

any thoughts on that?

1. I'm pretty sure Sportsters only have 2 holes to change primary and trans share the same oil.

2. Looks to be part of the spring as you have stated, might want to get a new one from the dealer.

3. Looks to be a witness mark on your clutch adjuster from where the spring broke and the sharp end marked it.

Thanks for the replies guys, it’s got to be part of the springs. Will be getting a new one.

Yep , upon reflection I concur . It's just a broken spring . The ends are closer together on the circlip . How it got broken is another matter .
