I've seen them over on xlforum, even some "how to" build one from a 4x6 or a couple 2x6s and some galvanized pipe. The general opinion is...meh.

I found a nice used motorcycle lift off CL for $50, and just made a cradle from scrap to hold the bike perfectly balanced. And I can use it to work on my friend's assorted bikes too.

Yep, made my own from scrap metal I had on hand, cost $0 (if the welder expense is disregarded ;-) Works well but later bought a MC jack, easier and safer to use if I don't have a helper handy when lifting the bike by myself. Too easy to drop the bike while hoisting it on a lever jack by yourself, DAMHIK ;-)

Might work for you Sportster, I have used one on my rigid Pan. Bagger, no way. Better off with a proper lift/bike jack.

Made one of those out of 2" pipes back in the 60's. I always put a heavy object on the end of the handle just in case. Used it up to the early 1980 and now it sitting in the corner of my garage. I now have a hydraulic M/C lift. Best thing since slice bread.

i had a step jack roll and the bike fell off, i was able to hold it from dropping but still scared the **** out of me.

i have one of those, it works super well. not as sturdy as a proper lift, but it's easy to use and does the job. i've had my bike on it all winter so far while i've been rebuilding.

I had one that was made a bit differently. Used it on Dyna and Softails. Worked just fine.

The rails may be too wide for proper placement on a Sporster. You might have to construct a "cradle" for it like I did for the same style lift, works perfectly on my bike.
