This is no big deal. Thanks for the help. Totally my fault for not reading the fine print and not the end of the world. I'm relieved there's a Hammer representative here to chime in.

All I'm going to say is that the Hammer website could stand to be a little more user friendly, but generally speaking buying parts is seldom cut and dry 100% satisfaction guaranteed. It is what it is. Glad I got some clarification.

The heads went together without a hitch but this clutch issue through me off.

So to put the clutch back together and eliminate the middle spring plate I'll refer to the manual which says to start with a steel. I have an abundance of plates now, so that's no problem. Just need to get my stack height correct minus the spring plate. So to do this i just add 2 additional steel and 1 friction to compensate? Alternating of course.

My caliper says the spring plate is roughly 5mm. 2 steel and 1 friction is 5.3mm. I've done a re-stack starting with a steel and ending with a friction and I've got proper compression enough on the stack to turn the main sprocket.

Am I good to go?

lol Start with a friction and end with a friction. No spring Grenade plate. I think an energy one stack height is around 1.275

If memory recalls, but regardless start and end with a friction.

I'm not sure I understood everything BadBastard is doing, but if I read it correctly,
a diaphram spring from a 1200 or E1 +15% is still needed, not the original 883 one....

Right ?

thanks,

T.

Yes I'm still using a +15% spring.

Thanks for all the help.

Through the 2003 model year, the 883 and the 1200 shared the same clutch spring.

Beginning in 2004, all 883's started getting a weaker clutch spring, to reduce lever effort.

Because of that weaker spring, converting a 2004+ XL883 to 1200/1250/1275 requires upgrading at least the spring. If you don't change the spring, the clutch will slip badly. You'll give it a handful of throttle while in the upper gears and it'll feel like you kicked it into neutral.

However, it's not required to upgrade the spring on a pre-2004 model.

If anyone ever asks me about getting a hammer kit my response will now be CALL THEM AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED.

Knowing beforehand that I didn't actually need a new clutch pack would've been cool. Learned my lesson haha.

IDK... I read & re-read the website probably 10+ times & also referred back to it when installing my kit.
I found it extremely helpful. Seems pretty clear to me what is NEEDED per-year though on this page;
