Did you have to get the kit to make the fuel gauge work? I didn't realize that was required when I bought the speedo, not a big deal but just wondering.

Yep, it is not optional if you want the fuel levels (bars) to work.

good luck,

Many companies go in for this gotcha kind of stuff. Could of been an option to add it to the basket.

It does show however on the surdyke page that XL models require separate purchase of Fuel Sensor Kit P/N 61200008A to make use of the fuel level and range function.

That's because the Sporty never had a true fuel level sensor, it's more like a switch.
When you get low on fuel, the "float" switch completes a circut & low-fuel light
turns on.

However, another "story" I read is how everyone's low-fuel light seems to get triggered
at different levels of "low"....

Yes, I have had a pump out of a tank and know of the switch.

I think the volume of petrol changes depending on the weather.

Yes sir, his low fuel light has never worked properly, it will come on with 3/4 tank left. Will this new sensor kit just eliminate that or will the new gauge not work if his light was not functioning properly?

You will replace the switch inside the tank with a sender unit so that should take care of that. There is also a plug you put in place of the resistor pack.
