ah, the sportster, so little love, so much love.
While my first motorcycle was a '47 Knucklehead, I consider my first real motorcycle the XLH I purchased the following summer. It was a perfect testosterone machine for a 16 year old.
While I ride and tour on a Road King, I've always had a sportster. If I sell it, within months I have another. 900, 1000, 883, 1200, 1300 makes absolutely no difference for the smiles per miles.
No matter my 70 plus years, when I get on my sporty, my 16 year old brain takes over. Nothing feels so good to me as a ride on my sporty.
As to whether it is a real Harley, when you are riding one, who cares what you think.

"The only other check that the helmet then undergoes is to ensure that there’s enough peripheral vision allowed by the helmet – that’s a minimum of 105 degrees from centre."
So that would be 210° from edge to edge. The myth is reporting fact. If your crash helmet does not meet the test then it should fail DOT.

I've never had a problem with peripheral vision in any of my full face helmets, regardless of brand.
For some reason, I have one full face helmet that for some reason seems to act like a vacuum and sucks up a bee occasionally from the bottom front and then it walks across my face shield. So far, all I've had to do is flip up the face shield to blow it out of the top. Weird. I've never had another one do that. I still wear it occasionally but my newer one has a net at the bottom front that I call my "bee filter". Other than that, I've never had any kind of problem with any of my full face shields over the years and I've had a lot of them. If you check the statistics, jaw fractures are high on the list of injuries in motorcycle crashes for those who don't use a full face shield.
I have a buddy who still keeps his 1970's model Bell full face helmet (the first design and butt ugly) on display in his house because it saved his head in a crash. It looks like someone took a grinder to it and scarred over 90% of the surface.

You can read here a summary of the DOT test - What is the DOT motorcycle crash helmet standard? - Billys Crash Helmets

All of them had the common theme, "Sportsters are the only TRUE Harleys, baggers are all turds ridden by fat old men".
