If you don't want to take the cover off , take the plugs out and see if you can rotate the engine in gear using the back wheel .

I was going to suggest that but the description of being able to select a gear without pulling the clutch though implies there is no final drive.

Maybe the spring plate let go and has pieces wedged in there.

Good morning and thanks for all the input!

I got her towed yesterday and am going to inspect a bit further today.

i’ll check clutch adjustment and primary inspection port before removing the primary cover too. I did read about the clutch spring plate grenade scenario as well - not sure if that would cause similar symptoms.

is this the right side front pulley recommended to inspect behind the sprocket cover?

cheers,
jb

That is the belt pulley on the right hand side. The cover to remove is on the left side.

You need to drain the oil out first before taking the whole cover off.

You can remove the derby cover or chain inspection cover without needing to drain the oil.

Thanks Andy! I’ll setup to inspect a little before draining and opening the primary. Wish I had a garage but I don’t so i’ll need to work in the street out front. Most of my tools are already in the car and it’s a perfect day to jam some tunes and wrench a little.

cheers,
jb

Regarding the Primary Cover , if you are careful and a little lucky , the main gasket will remain intact enabling it to be reused . Some may disagree with this practice but I've had my Primary Cover off twice now ( Starter Clutch and Extra Plate Clutch Kit ) and it doesn't leak a drop of oil .
By the way , you will need a Clutch Spring Compression Tool to inspect the dreaded Spring Plate . In fact , this might be a valuable opportunity to replace it anyway . It's got to be done someday .

Thanks everyone! I removed the derby cover and went through the JP Cycles clutch adjustment video and she’s got drive power again. I find it hard to believe that this could have been so close to tolerance that these symptoms would have presented like this so thankfully i’m always learning.

I do have on my list to rebuild the clutch probably with something aftermarket so will be looking at the options.

For now I’m going to tighten her back up and go for a ride.

cheers!

Well that is good news.

It looks like from above you already have the FSM. Just read through that for any jobs you intend to tackle. All the information is in there.
