We don't have yearly inspections where I livein MD thank goodnessbut should I ever sell or have an inspectionyou can always stick on some reflector tape from Pepboys. When I removed mine even with heatgun and fihsing line the adhesive peeled the clear coat right off. In my opinion the fork legs look much better polished, chromed or powdercoated vs. the factory clear over bare dull aluminum.Mine have been polished since Feb. and a few thousand miles and I've only touched them up with mothers polish twice since and actually just occassional waing with mothers cleaner wax will take any oxidation right off.

Polish'em. And if anybody doesn't want to do their own, I have a set that I will sell for $150.00 no trade or $100 trade. Old sliders MUST be in working excellent condition. (reflectors optional) Fits '00-'07 XL models (except XL883R, XL1200S and XL1200R) These sliders are polished and buffed, no reflectors.

It could be worse, I somehow managed to put a couple nice little chips in my paint getting mine off. One side popped right off, the other wouldn't budge. It's a Nightster, so it's nice and noticeable.[:@]

Now I gotta figure out how to blend in touch up paint, always had bad luck with that.

Touching up your black tubes might me a little tough with paint as the factory ones are powdercoated.

Use chemical paint stripper to get the clear off (beats extra sanding). Sand with wet/dry automotive paper with 225-325,400,600,800,1000,2000 gritswith soapy water or WD40 as lubricant wiped clean, hand or buff polish with Mothers Aluminum polish (I also used claybar compounds but Mothers works just as well). By the way having amotorcycle jackand removing the front wheel and brake caliper makes the job much easier and you can leave the fork tubes on. Will take you about 4-6 hrs. to do it all thoroughly. Once done it takes little to keep shiny, just a bit of mothers from time to time or cleaner wax.
