OK so I put in the 2" spacer and the height is exactly the same but the preload is insane now. I'm at a loss here, might need longer tubes?

No the preload is not insane. You do know that the 2008 Roadster has longer damper rods, which is equivalent to spacers. In fact, all models have the same fork tube length but different damper rod lengths. That's what makes the L and the R models sit at different heights in front.

FWIW, I have a 2007 XL1200L and I did exactly what you did: cheap 13" rear shocks from a 2007 R and [longer] damper rods in the front... which is the same as what your spacers accomplish. Longer damper rods part number 45925-04.

How many miles on those shocks? And how do you know you can trust the E-Bay seller?

I think using used shocks on a bike is like using a used condom you found in an alley.

Although if you are going to go with used shocks, put a set of touring bike air shocks in the back. Should be able to pick up a set of new take off's for about $100 and they will ride much better than the stock shocks.

You have just learned (and taught me) that the extra long spacer does not increase fork length, it just squished the springs aka added more preload.

You don't need longer tubes, I think what your looking for is to change the damper tube in the bottom of the forks, both sides.

I don't know if your 08 low would get the same results, but I've just fitted 13" Hagon Shocks to my 12' superlow & haven't noticed any ride/handling problems without changing the front height, that's not to say that the front wouldn't benefit from better springing, but the ride height seems ok & the bottom of the frame looks pretty level.

Like I said, Tracker Die has the kit you need with the longer damper tubes.

pretty sure compressing the spring down more into the same space will increase the preload.. but what do I know

Adding the PVC spacers will take up some of the sag thereby raising your frontend. IF your spacers are waaaaay too long so as to eat up ALL the sag then you're in trouble. You can always cut the 2" spacers shorter. Another way to fine-tune is to play with the amount of fork oil you add to the forks. Less oil means softer, more oil means firmer ride. With the added PVC spacers, you are bound to need less oil anyway. Be careful not to add too much oil or you might bust your seals.

If you are still concerned, then go my route: replace your damper rods with new ones from Harley, part number: 45925-04.

HTH.
