Default Bolt size lookup

Hi,

I am living in a "metric" country and it is a bit difficult to get bolts in inch. It would be great to know the size of certain bolts to facilitate getting them, is there an index on bolt (or thread) sizes in the maintenance manual. for example:

if I want to know the thread size of bolt "6" in this picture - is there a reference list somewhere?

Tom

Can't help, sorry but I have a suggestion. As you replace or change bolts get the nearest equivalent metric size. As long as you just bolting two things together this will work. For ones that are bolted into a welded on nut or a threaded dead end hole make note and try to find the standard equivalent before it becomes a necessity. I have even retapped standard holes or nuts with a metric tap and the bolts held fine especially since I locktite most stuff. Not to be done on critical fasteners for sure but there are a lot of non-critical fasteners. Unless you are bringing the bike back to the States, whomever you sell it to will be glad to have as many metric fasteners as possible to avoid the problem you have. Good luck

Try Ronnie's. Find the part number you need then google it. Most are out there.

Another idea, order some nut/bolt and screw kits from Amazon so you always have some around.

The most common sizes I've found are, but limited to:
10-32 (not a lot)
1/4-20 (a lot)
5/16-18 (a few)
3/8-16 (a few)
7/16-14 (a few)
1/2-13 (a few)
As an aside, that bolt #6 you mentioned would be a Harley only piece as it is specific to its use.
The #4 bolt on the other hand is something that would be replaceable by a hardware store item.
And as Kuri77 mentioned, in an emergency for a non-critical fastener, his suggestion is worthwhile to keep in mind, but not something I would do unless absatively posilutely necessary to get me home.
And that is not a slam, Kuri.

A set of dies and taps in SAE and Metric come in handy.

Hi you all,

many thanks for the great information, will check out he website and the idea of metric plus loctite for non critical parts is also a good hint.

All bolt specs are at the back of the factory parts manual.

The Harley SIP has a free parts catalog for your bike and if you search by part number within it one hit will give you something like this
4820A SCREW 1/4-20 X 2 socket head
Free registration is required but is well worth it, LOTS of good info there

There is no problem here, the fastener sizes and grades are all listed in the parts manual.

I think any owner would prefer that the fasteners on the machine are the parts specified in the parts manual.

How would you like to buy a used bike only to find out it is a mishmash of metric and imperial fasteners?

I agree that quality fasteners are the way to go ... However, in today's scooters there is/are already a mishmash of metric and standard fasteners :<(
