74' 1000cc sporty: no top-end
Hello Friends:
This is my first post here. I just obtained a 1974 Sportster XLH (1000cc). I've been working on bikes for over 25 years but I've notworked on a S&S carb.
My question is this: My sporty tops out at around 5000rpms (no matter the gear I'm in). The idle is fine and accelleration is fine but I can't get it to "open-up".
I know the dude I purchased it from just replace the carb. The carb that is currently on the bike is a S&S 330. The carb-throat has the word "Shorty" stamped on it.
Is it probable that the main jet is too small? I have a lot of experience with Mikuni carbs but none on S&S. Is there a site where I can see the schematics for this 330-carb?
Thanks much for any input: dtkid

You might check out the following for information on the S&S carb settings.
http://www.harleyhelp.com/faq.html#car
Also, S&S used the 'Shorty' description on different models. For the most part the it was used on the Super E's (1 7/8") and Super G's (2 1/16").
