Iron 883 Not Charging

You need a voltmeter. With the engine running at a fast idle you should measure around 14.4volts across the battery. If not it might be the stator or regulator or their connections to the bike.
What you describe as the battery lamp I am guessing is the system error lamp. Check for DTC codes.

I am not great mechanically but I checked the connection on the reg and they looked ok. Is there a sure fire way to determine without spending a fortune.
thank you

In short, yes there is. I'm not sure when Sporties became Canbus (or if they are) but for pre-canbus bikes there is a Sticky in the Tech Electrical section, which takes you through the testing process, to identify the source.

Direct on plug 47 using ohm meter the stator should not be open circuit but don't what it will be. Measure on plug 47 with ac voltage meter and engine running you should see a voltage. Not sure what it will be but might be 25 VAC to 50VAC.
Some guys over here have had the cable from the stator to the regulator get cut where it is too tight to the crankcase. You might want to look for evidence of that.
If good then check output from regulator. Should be 14.4 volts direct on 77A. Might be higher with the regulator not connected. If good then a wire is broken to the battery.
