Default chrome safe adhesive remover

i recently bought steath grips and my thumbs hurt a lot when im riding, i think its either where i hold onto them or it could also be the new drag bars but i dont think it is, so my plan is to take out the rubber inserts that are adhered into the grooves and i'd imagine there would be some adhesive residue behind that, any suggestions on how to get that out?

Maybe a hair dryer would loosen it up or how bout some of that stuff that takes wall paper off ?
Paint thinner may dissolve the adhesive, but could screw up any rubber ...

Goo Gone will be just fine. I've never had it harm anything I've put it on to include chrome.
