Change the oil pump drive gear. It's a requirement as far as I'm concerned. mine looked fine on one side and the teeth were worn to a razer edge on the other side. When the stock gear fails kiss the motor goodbye.

I highly recommend replacing the oil pump drive gear with a bronze one while you're in there. Harley should've done it. They did it with everything but the Sporty.
Hammer sells them too as well as a tool to lock it in place while breaking the nut loose and torqueing it back down. You don't want that torque transferring to the flywheel. Really simple.

$450ish total. Cams, drive gear, and tool, cam cover gasket. Best bang for your buck you'll ever do.
such good info thanks! Question: is it worth upgrading anything in the rocker box area while that’s open? Or lifters too? Or can those stock parts handle the power increase? Also any thoughts on the collapsible / adjustable push rods and housings? Is the only benefit ease of install or is it a better part too? I’m researching this now and definitely my next mod!! Under $450 bucks seems amazing. Oh one more question; will the Vance and Hines tuner be able to tune for these cams? Or do I need a custom tune from someone.

Nothing needs to done/upgraded in the rocker boxes or push rods on 04+ 1200s. The added lift is done partially by using smaller base circles on the cams and the hydraulic lifters compensate enough for the very small difference to not need longer pushrods. Adjustable are only another places to leak oil and not the route I'd go if longer ones WERE needed. You won't even pull them. Leave them in the tubes. Heads need to come off for the tubes unless you cut the old ones first. No need for this.
No benefit from replacing lifters either tho I did replace mine with S&S premiums but only because they're quieter and my heads were off anyway. I did a 1250 kit too. Still used stock pushrods.

Can't speak for the V&H tuner. I'm carbed.

thanks, great to know. So basically cam covers off so I can relieve tension on pushrods. But no need to remove heads for the cams? If so that’s great.

I assume you meant rocker boxes and yes. Remember to get each cylinder on TDC compression before removing the rocker boxes tho. Rocker box covers can come off first. Easier to see the intake pushrod go up and then back down to know you're on TDC compression and not TDC exhaust. No need to remove heads.

yes thanks! Yeah thinking my car with the “cam cover“. Lol. Took me a while to stop saying valve covers and here I am messing that up. Lol. Thanks again, all that makes sense.

I still call them valve covers sometimes. Old habits...

The Hammer Perf video is worth watching if you've never done a cam swap.

Very good advice. I always forget about those. They do a good job.
