DON'T. Refill the gear box through the primary chain inspection cover ( 2 screws). It's much easier, just add 32oz (1 quart).

Thanks
I purchased the repair manual from HD and it said to refill through the Inspection cover also. I was wondering why I had to reove the Derby Cover at all!

Thanks

Fill through the prim chain inspection cvoer (2 screws only!)....even on an 2007 Nightster?
My 07 service manual says to remove the derby cover install new gasket ($1.50) instead of the above easier way.

Well, no one has to listen to me, but I always remove the cover to make sure it's filled correctly and not overfilled, which can cause clutch drag and other problems. The level should be at the bottom of your clutch plates/spring, and you can't see this without removing the cover. The cover is easy to take off and easy to put back on.

But hey, whatever turns yer wheels and makes ya happy, it's your bike...

I would only take the derby cover off to replace the torx's screws with allen head type and apply some never seize to the fastners. Unless a clutch asjustment was in order.

Does anyone know how much gear oil to put. I'm guessing if you open the derby cover and do this a few times and each time you put in the same amount of oil, then after that you can refill theu the inspection cover instead of the derby.
