Take a poll. There are thousands of bikes out there without this problem without a drop of Loctite.

Something is happening that we cannot see.

I put washers under the flanged bolts that hold the mufflers on because I saw them on a parts list website. The screws came undone. I then looked at the FSM and see there is no washer called for.

New screws fitted sans washers and they hold firm and without Loctite.

Bought my 2013 Custom last month, battery was starting to struggle so I bought a new one. When removing the old one I was greeted with this

No, I mean that a bolt goes through end ring eye of each battery cable, then a short spacer over the bolt, then the bolt threads go through terminal and screw into nut. Or, perhaps your bolt screws directly into the battery terminal. I know my battery has a spacer to keep the battery cable end ring is just clear of the battery case and the bolt snugs tight, does not loosen.

Post up a picture so we can see what you are describing.

It looks like yours might be missing the spacers and caused that problem. Do you have two short round cylindrical spacers that your bolts go through?

Actually that’s exactly right, the previous owner didn’t use spacers and apparently just shrugged overtightened both leads. (I used spacers on the new battery.)

Without spacers, as you tighten the bolts, it puts pressure on the side of the terminal, leading to breakage, or loosening. Let's hope that's the OP's problem.
